Mission Statement
The Colfax County Clerk's Office is the custodian of public records and strives to protect and preserve the records and comply with state statutes and the Constitution of New Mexico. We endeavor to conduct fair, honest and accurate elections and believe it is imperative to treat each citizen in a professional and courteous manner, always remembering that we serve the citizens.

Rayetta M. Trujillo
County Clerk
Rayetta Trujillo was elected to her first term as Colfax County Clerk in November, 2004 and took office on January 1, 2005. She has been an employee of the Colfax Clerk's office since April 2003 as the Chief Deputy Clerk.

Originally from Cimarron, New Mexico, she has worked in municipal government from September 1989 thru March 2000 as a Deputy Municipal Clerk and as the Municipal Clerk.

She has worked for Colfax County from September 2001 thru April 2003 as the Assistant County Manager and enjoys spending time with family, officiating volleyball and the outdoors.

Freda L Baca
Chief Deputy County Clerk
Freda L Baca began her employment in the County Clerk's Office in August, 2006 before being appointed as Chief Deputy.

Freda was born and raised in Raton and graduated from Raton High School.

Freda and her husband Leonard have two children,  Leonard Baca Jr and Angela Volpato. They also have four grandchildren, Tristan, Gabrielle, Nicholas, and Isabella.
 
Duties & Responsibilities
The county clerk serves as the arm of the state with regard to the administration of elections in the county and as whose duties include recording, filing and indexing numerous documents required by law to be filed in the clerk's office.

The clerk serves as the ex-officio clerk for both the board of county commissioners and the probate court. The clerk is responsible for the issuance of marriage licenses, business registration licenses, liquor licenses and the collection of fees for same.

BIRTH & DEATH CERTIFICATE

Birth and Death Certificates are NOT issued at the Colfax County Clerk's Office. We CANNOT copy death certificates under any circumstances!

LIQUOR LICENCE

To obtain a liquor license from the Colfax County clerk's office you will need the following:
  • A valid state liquor license, issued by the State of New Mexico.
  • $250.00, it must be paid in full at time issue.
Each license issued from Colfax County is valid for exactly one year from the time of issuance, at the end of each yearly cycle a new license must be issued. Proof of state license and fee will be applied for each year the license is issued.

In order to serve you better, we retain all information pertaining to the issuance of a license. All New Mexico State liquor licenses will be verified prior to issuance of Colfax County liquor license.

MARRIAGE LICENCE

No Waiting Period or Blood test are required to get a marriage license.

To obtain a marriage license, both individuals need to be over the age of 18. Parental consent is required for an individual if he or she is 16 or 17 years of age. A court order is required for anyone 15 years of age or younger.

You will need the following to obtain a marriage license from the Colfax County clerk's office:

  • $25.00 CASH or local check only.
  • Identification that includes social security number and date of birth for both applicants.
To ensure the finalization of marriage licenses, it is important to return the license to our office via mail or hand delivery. We will mail the license back or hand it back if it is brought in person. A marriage license is NOT complete until it is recorded it in the county clerk's office.

Colfax County clerk's office does not record divorce records. Divorce records are kept at the DISTRICT COURT in the county where the divorce was filed. The number for the Colfax County District Court is: (505) 445-5584.

The clerk's office will not conduct searches but can provide a list of local abstract and title companies upon request.

The clerks cannot give legal advice pertaining to whether the documents which are presented for recording are correct, complete or legally sufficient for your purpose.

The clerks will assist the public in any way possible. We are here to record and file documents as public record and maintain them for your future use.
